Big water muskie trolling requires a BIG set up. We run okuma Cold water 453 size reels and heavy duty Okuma lake trolling rods. We run heavy duty big game 40LB mono with 100LB leaders. When trolling the big water we often run 6 or 8 rods requiring us to use a mast and board system. Planner boards ensure we cover a lot of water and put fish in the boat.

Hearing that drag click on a BIG lake st clair muskie is a sound like no other!

Muskie fishing requires a heavy duty set up. We will be running rods an reels with 100lb braided line, tipped with a 130lb fluorocarbon leader. We will be using various sized baits.  In the late fall when the muskies are putting on there feed bag for the winter months we up size the baits to pounder bull dawgs and monster medusas.

In the summer and fall we will be focusing on open water structure and keying in on where the bait is. Another great technique to catch muskie in deep water such as the Detroit River is jigging, this technique requires a bow mount trolling motor and good electronics to key in on bait fish and drop offs. The reward of catching a fish on these techniques is outstanding.

When muskie fishing, it is important to practice proper catch and release to maintain a trophy fishery on Lake St. Clair. We support CPR 100% (Catch, Photo, Release) and will practice it on all the muskie we catch. My boat is equipped with proper muskie handling tools such as multiple sets of pliers of every size, over sized coated muskie net, muskie bump board, hook cutters, girth tape and jaw spreaders.

The technique we will be using is vertical jigging plastics and live bait. We will be locating schools of bait fish in the river and slowly fishing over top of them using a bow mount trolling motor that will keep us on top of the fish. The technique consists of dropping an appropriate sized jig to the bottom and bouncing it along waiting for a walleye to latch on.

When walleye fishing in the spring there is a very good chance you will catch some very big fish. I prefer to catch and release the bigger fish to help maintain a trophy walleye population. You are more than welcome to keep smaller eating size fish, which i can clean for you after your trip.
